Fly-In / Drive-in Breakfast at the Perry-Warsaw Airport, Departs at 7:30 AM from Tim Hortons, 4750 W. Henrietta Rd, Rochester – This is a Rochester Sports Car Meetup event that is open to all. “It might be called a fly-in breakfast but most people arrive by car for an $8 all-you-can-eat breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes. FIBs are usually fun because small rural airports are interesting and we’ll get a close-up view of small aircraft taking off and landing if the weather is good. This airport is home to a Civil Air Patrol squadron and the proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the cadets.

The plan is to get an early start so we’ll have time to do other things on Sunday, like change the front control arm bushings on a Z4. We’ll leave Tim Hortons promptly at 7:30 AM and probably take some interesting back roads instead of the expressway. Everyone will find their own way home after breakfast. The airport, located at 6522 State Route 20A in Perry, is about a 36 mile, 52 minutes drive from downtown Rochester.”

It was truly “Open Wheel Madness,” and we invite you to relive it with the IMRRC on March 23.”  Speakers include: Herb Anastor, a sportswriter and columnist, and Stephen Bubb who has been involved in all facets of racing.

Autocross #6 sponsored by the Finger Lakes SCCA, 8 AM to 4 PM, Webster NY – First time participants and spectators are welcome. AutoX uses rubber cones to create a course in a large parking lot that cars will race through individually against the clock. The course is usually short and tight so speeds usually don’t reach much than 35 mph. It’s a lot of fun and it’s very unlikely that any harm will come to you or your car. You can use any car as long as it can pass a simple “tech” inspection to ensure it’s safe.

If you are a first-timer get there early and find the registration tent or trailer. Tell them you’re new and ask them to introduce you to an instructor or an experienced club member. They will be very happy to help you get started. Also join the “novice” meeting and course walk that will take place before the competition begins. You can also do this even if you’re just going to be a spectator.

Bring a roll of 1-inch wide masking tape to put the number they’ll give you on your car. You should also bring something to eat and drink. Crash helmets are required and the club can loan you one. You’ll usually get at least three “runs” in your first session and another three in the second one. Your best time is the one that counts and you’ll be placed in a class that will have you competing against others with similar cars and experience. When you’re not driving you’ll either be helping on the course or resting.

South Butler Nostalgia Dragway, 7 AM – 4 PM (opens for spectators at 9 AM) – We don’t publicize many races but we’re including this one because this event, its location and its history are intriguing.  To learn why read this article by the Finger Lakes Times newspaper.

This 60 year-old drag strip is surrounded by corn fields and is operated by volunteers. It operates on only four Sundays each year and this is the last race of year. Only vehicles built in 1990 or before can race.

Drivers pay $20 to race all day and spectators pay $5 to watch (children 12 and under are free). Tech inspection is at 7 AM and the spectator gates open at 9 AM. The races will be postponed a week if it rains and that information will be posted on their Facebook page.

The dragstrip is located on a farm about an hour’s drive from downtown Rochester.  The address is 13180 S Butler Conquest Road in Savannah NY.  [Editor’s note: This address is different than the one on the race flyer because Google Maps wouldn’t accept that one.  It will take this one, which is not the exact address, and it should get you within a couple of hundred feet of the dragstrip.]

If you’re coming from the north you’ll probably pass by the Sampson Military Museum which is located on the grounds of Sampson State Park (6040-6144 Rt 96A in Romulus). It’s a free gem that tells the history of the Sampson Naval Training Station and Air Force Base that was used in the 40s and 50s. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM.

It’s also one of the biggest, although this time of year there are far fewer cars that you’ll find during the middle of the summer. The restaurant has a very large lawn and parking lot and hundreds of cars can be seen on some nights.

The restaurant has an outdoor eating area where you can buy burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork dinners, pizza slices, etc. You can also eat inside the restaurant and order from the usual menu.

Cars & Coffee At Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery, 9 AM, Pittsford NY – Do you have a Porsche or an interest in them? This event is for members of the Niagara Region Porsche Club of America but we’re sure they won’t mind if owners of other makes stop by to look at their cars and get something for breakfast from the dairy, bakery or cafe.

The bakery makes authentic French breakfast pastries & quiche daily, along with dessert pastries, pies and cookies.

Afterwards we suggest you explore nearby Shoen Place. It’s a street that runs along the Erie canal with a variety of restaurants and shops that is often crowded with people walking along the canal. You can get a canal boat ride there and also rent canoes, kayaks and bicycles.
